Relying solely on data with a North American phone is a bad idea. Believe me, during my first 3 pre-pandemic trips to Japan I did, and it was a big mistake. For this most recent trip, since I was going to be visiting many cities and hand't been in Japan for a while, I decided to rent pocket wifi, and I'm very glad I did. charging it was super easy, and it made my phone work like it was my home country. Returning it was easy, just placed everything in the pre-labeled envelope, and then stuffed it into a mailbox at the airport.

The company even emailed me to confirm everything was returned. Definitely using this again for my next trip, it's so much easier!
