The pocket wifi made our trip more enjoyable in this world of apps, google translate and google maps. We used this extensively on our trip that we did without tour guides. Worth the money, but make sure to use the battery pack, since the battery in the pocket wifi only lasts about 4 hours.

Japan Wireless is my go-to pocket wifi provider. Pick-up at the airport ensures that I have access to google maps before I leave the airport which is a must when navigating Japan's subway system.

Drop-off before security check-in is also very convenient.
