We rented a pocket wifi from Japan Wireless for the 3 weeks we were in Japan. Pickup was easy at the JAL ABC in the terminal 2 arrival area, and we dropped off the device in a pre-labeled envelope in a post office box at the departure check in area.
We traveled through Kyushi, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nagoya and into the central Japanese Alps and never had a problem with connectivity. A fully charged device lasted most of the day. For a couple of days when we were using GPS a lot, we were able to recharge the device using the extra back up battery pack provided with the rental.
This is absolutely the way to go when traveling in Japan. Having reliable access to Google Maps whereever we went was invaluable and having internet access so that we could learn more about the places we were visiting added to the enjoyment of the trip.

I ordered the portable Wi-Fi modem for the morning after we arrived in Tokyo but was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was waiting for us when we booked into our hotel. Great service! The modem was easy to use and gave us coverage wherever we went in Japan. My husband was so pleased to have internet coverage without relying on hotel wifi. We were able to use google maps and google translate whilst out and about.We had a portable power bank with the modem in case we needed to recharge during the day, but we didn't need to use it. The modem was easy to recharge each night. It was convenient to be able to just post the modem package back in a postbox.I would fully recommend this to any friends visiting Japan.

Upon arrival in Tokyo (Narita) our immigration processes took longer than expected but surprisingly the JAL ABC counter was still open 2 hours after the posted closing time and I was able to pick up my wifi rental. Customer service hotline was very accommodating to English speakers about my concerns. Product worked without problems during the entire trip
