Used Japan Wireless Pocket Wifi in various parts of Japan. It was on 24/7 and didn't miss a beat. Coverage was excellent. Easy to order and the device was waiting at our hotel when we arrived.

Product：Premium WifiIf you only have a single phone that you're using, you might be able to get by with an e-SIM. But for anything else, there's no reason not to get a portable wifi device. The price is very reasonable, they're very easy to use, the coverage and performance are great, and they work with your phones/tables/camera/computer/watch/etc.
Free wifi does exist in various places in Japan, but it's often not so great, and it's non existent in the more remote areas. Hotel wifi is the only thing you can really rely on, but performance is hit or miss. And really, you're not spending _that_ much time in your hotel.
This works everywhere, the battery pretty much lasts all day. All you need to do is remember to charge it at night and you're good to go.
I use Japan Wireless every time I visit Japan. My device is always ready for me to pick up at my hotel, returning it at the airport is simple, and I have always had perfect wifi coverage wherever I am, in city or countryside. It is much easier to use than an eSim, and I highly recommend it.
