On advice from a friend living in Tokyo, I rented a pocket wi-fi and was pleased with the experience from beginning to end. In fact, I'll be renting again when I return soon. The online ordering was easy; the English-language information is very complete and straightforward throughout; the reminders prior to arrival and return are helpful; and the package of wifi unit, additional external battery, cables, pouch, and return envelope are perfect. Most importantly, the wifi worked great and enabled me to phone, SMS/text, email, and web just like I do at home -- some people didn't even realize I was out of the country. High-fives to Japan-Wireless!
