Used a US AT&T Unlocked Samsung S9+ and had excellent service. I never got shut off for too much data (and used what I felt like was a lot, though I connected to Wi-Fi frequently), had no issues connecting NordVPN over cellular. Good speeds (20-50Mbps down, 5-10Mbps up). I was in Kyoto, Osaka, Kanazawa, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Miyajima. I was rarely without service and generally had service when my friends with Google Fi did not (including the top of the highest mountain on Miyajima). Definitely recommend.
