One of the best things we did while planning our holiday to Japan was to book in a Japan Wireless fast pocket wifi device. There was a simple pick-up process at the airport and we had it working on the bus on our way into town. The device didn't miss a beat and actually performed better than the WiFi in several of the apartments we stayed in.

I ordered just 4 days before I fly to Japan. The send the device to my hotel. Was very useful and less expensive that buy cards in Japan or ordered from my country.
