We ordered pocket wi-fi from Japan Wireless, which we used for two weeks. It worked great!
It was especially important for us because both my wife and I needed to use our laptops for work activities, so for us, it was much better than using a temporary SIM card for our phones. (We were staying, part of the time, at a place without wi-fi, and it was critical for both of us to have access to the internet at all times.)
The pouch we received from Japan Wireless also had a battery and a charger, so we could keep the pocket wi-fi charged when we were on the go. HOWEVER, please note that one battery is not enough if you will be on the go all day! Luckily, both my wife and I brought our own.

One of the best things about Japan Wireless is their service. Because we arrived at Haneda rather late, I requested that they send the pocket wi-fi to our hotel on the following morning. That was fantastic. It was already waiting for us at the hotel front desk when we arrived. Drop-off was just as easy as they provided a pre-paid letter pack; we put everything back in the pouch; we put it in the letter pack and dropped it off in the postal box at Haneda Airport.
