The wifi hotspot provided has been able to keep internet nearly everywhere, even underground in the subway. We were 5 to use it and the speed was good (enough to watch YouTube on multiple phones), as well as the range. The provided external battery is sufficient to keep the hotspot on during the whole day without any problems.
It was really easy to return it at the end of the trip in the provided envelope.
To resume, it is a cost effective solution to keep internet during a trip in Japan if there are multiple people in the group, plus it doesn’t mess with the operator settings of a smartphone since the SIM card is untouched.
