Staying in Japan as a foreign visitor who is neither able to speak nor to read the language , it is substantially important to be "online" everywhere and anytime since otherwise communication and thus getting around is extremely difficult.
Few signs only are bilingual (Japanese and English) and even though Japanese people are outstandingly friendly, polite and helpful, unfortunately few only speak some words of English which then on top is pretty difficult to understand !
This well-functioning device but makes it very easy to communicate and to navigate - in the "jungle" of giant cities as well as in remote rural areas !

The pocket WiFi we rented worked great! Easy to pick up at the airport and drop off in mailbox.

Easy to order, pick-up and set-up. We rented two units for four people for two weeks. Used throughout the day and always carried a battery charger (which we used multiple times when we were out for most of the day). One unit worked flawlessly; the other had to be reset more than a dozen times which got annoying. We’d still recommend for anyone traveling from the US to Japan.

Our pocket WiFi was great. It was easy to pick up and often lasted a full day. Three of us shared it and we were all able to use it with good speed at the same time. It wasn’t very large and I just kept it in my daypack. We used all over Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. The one area with spotty coverage was at Tokyo DisneySea. Even that wasn’t too bad. The only other challenge is if your group needs to separate. But, we knew that and it really wasn’t much of an issue. Returning it was super simple. Great value and performance!
