Since you're going to spend a lot of time using Google Maps, you need to have a stable internet connection. Even while riding the Shinkansen, I and my wife were able to stay connected. Highly recommended.

Pick up an envelop at the airport post office with your device. It comes with a little zip bag to take with you on your journey. At the end of your rental period just put everything in an extra envelop you also received and post it back. Very happy with this way of staying in contact every were I went.
