I have rented this twice now and found it to be extremely useful for keeping in touch with family while on the move. Mobile phone plans for foreign visitors are data only and often have fair use policies that throttle them so there's no real difference using a hotspot except you can use multiple devices and in this case have truly unlimited data.

One difficulty was the battery life on the device and the powerbank. They ran down quite quickly but using my own portable powerbank kept me going all day.

The only truly unlimited plan I could find in Japan.

This was our first Japan Wireless service experience and it was nothing less than excellent all the way round. From the moment we picked up our WiFi package at Narita Airport until the day we dropped it off at a local post office, the device worked beyond our expectations. Not once were we without WiFi service for the three weeks we were in Japan, which is to say Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. We can not thank Japan Wireless enough for the excellent service and experience we enjoyed during our visit.
