For our trip to Japan, we ordered a pocket Wi-Fi device from Japan Wireless.
Upon arrival at the airport, we briefly searched for the pickup location, but once we found it, we received the package immediately after scanning the QR code.

The included installation brochure started it up immediately, and we had Wi-Fi right away. We were a family of three.

We had Wi-Fi without any problems throughout our entire trip. Even in the subways, we were amazed at how good the Wi-Fi was.

This is definitely a good thing if you're traveling as a family, since you always have to be close to each other to have Wi-Fi. If you were doing things separately, I'd suggest getting an e-SIM.

Always skeptical about portable wifi. But worked all over japan, must carry extra battery - which they provide.
Travels from Hokkaido, to tokyo, to osaka, to tottori and a bunch of other locations. Wifi worked great. Would get again.
