Without it there were several occasions where we would have lost our wifi connection, which needs to be maintained to find your way around Tokyo and other areas of Japan. Recommended.

Used Japan Wireless Pocket Wifi in various parts of Japan. It was on 24/7 and didn't miss a beat. Coverage was excellent. Easy to order and the device was waiting at our hotel when we arrived.

The pocket WiFi is just what I needed for my two week vacation in Japan. It was extremely easy to order, they delivered it directly to my hotel. The service was excellent and I appreciated that it came with an additional battery pack. The cost of the rental was cheaper than purchasing an international plan from my cell phone provider. Returning the pocket WiFi was just as easy and convenient to return in the airport

If you only have a single phone that you're using, you might be able to get by with an e-SIM. But for anything else, there's no reason not to get a portable wifi device. The price is very reasonable, they're very easy to use, the coverage and performance are great, and they work with your phones/tables/camera/computer/watch/etc.

Free wifi does exist in various places in Japan, but it's often not so great, and it's non existent in the more remote areas. Hotel wifi is the only thing you can really rely on, but performance is hit or miss. And really, you're not spending _that_ much time in your hotel.

This works everywhere, the battery pretty much lasts all day. All you need to do is remember to charge it at night and you're good to go.

I use Japan Wireless every time I visit Japan. My device is always ready for me to pick up at my hotel, returning it at the airport is simple, and I have always had perfect wifi coverage wherever I am, in city or countryside. It is much easier to use than an eSim, and I highly recommend it.
