When I travel from Canada to Europe, I am used to buying a local Sim card for my phone.
In Japan, Pocket Wifi was much better.
Our flight from Vancouver was 7 hours late; but our P-W was waiting for us at Narita, ready to connect. And after 19 hours of flight, I particularly enjoyed I was in no need to fiddle with removing/replacing/storing your national nanocards.
My wife's phone, my phone and my tablet were all connected on our single P-W. but there was always enough power for a full day. The connections were good everywhere except one day for few hours in the mountains.

The whole Planet should adopt Pocket Wifi.

This is a must have if you are traveling to Japan. It also worked well from the cruise ship much more often than expected when close to shore. It was flawless on land.

I didn’t know about pocket wifi until I researched a trip to Japan. My wireless carrier offers roaming but most websites and influencers were pushing for pocket wifi. Not only does using this service provide coverage in all the areas I visited in Japan but it was fast and reliable. Others had Verizon and had black zones. Pricing is also cheaper per day than my roaming. I traveled solo but it would be even more advantageous for those with more members in their party. I will definitely be renting again the next time I visit Japan.
