Went with Japan Wireless after skimming online reviews of various alternatives. Proved to be super reliable for my wife and me over three weeks touring in Japan, including travel into the Alps. I think we used around 21GB of data in total, across two devices in almost constant use for translating, maps, booking accommodation, etc. Battery usually lasted entire day although we carried the extra battery pack and were able to recharge occasionally. Data speeds were good enough to have reliable Facetime calls back home without lag or dropouts. Worked great on the Shinkansen as well. Online ordering, pick-up and drop-off at Narita Airport post office was dead simple. Wouldn’t hesitate to order again and have recommended to others.

The last time I visited Japan back in 2016 I didn't have any pocket wifi and I really struggled getting around.
This time I ordered a pocket wifi unit from Japan Wireless and it made my trip so much more enjoyable. It was so easy to set up a pick up date and location, and connecting to the unit was as simple as can be as well. It worked great in Tokyo, Fukuyama, and Okinawa! One thing to keep in mind is that if you suddenly can't connect to the unit, check and make sure you haven't accidentally added your phone to the blocked list while it was in your pocket. Yeah, happened to me. Haha. Great experience, will use them for my next trip as well!

This small very portable device made it possible to leave our two iPhones in airplane mode during our whole Japan , while the internet connection was perfect, we even received phone calls through WhatsApp

This made travel really easy. Easy pick up from airport, worked just as it should have, from every place on our travels around Japan - then an easy return by popping in post box at airport. Simples.... (Oh, and great reception, never an issue)
