The eSIM was the best option for us. I added it to my phone the day we arrived in Japan and never had any issues. If my husband needed internet, he could spot my phone, and we never had any issues. eSim activation was quite easy to be done using the airport's Wifi. It works as expected, but inside some buildings, internet is a bit weak, not sure if it's the same for others, but once you're out of the premise, internet is really all well.
