After installing the e-sim at Narita Airport (you need to be online, use the free Narita wi-fi) and configuring my iphone to use it for data access, I had ZERO problems with cellular access. Great coverage, great speed. Please be sure to only activate the card *once you're in Japan*, don't do it overseas. I burned one esim this way.
