I turned off my home e-sim and activated the Japan Wireless esim. The phone rebooted and instantly I was connected to the local Japan network. I was able to use these esims better than local wifi at the hotels and it outperformed the free wifi on the bullet trains. The only downside is that you don't get an actual phone number and need to use wifi-calling via WhatsApp or whatever relevant app you prefer. My main concern was unlimited 5G data with free Hotspot capability so my other devices could also be used online even without a Sim card.
