Just to be sure I had understood exactly what you should and should not do before arriving in Japan, I contacted Japan Wireless customer services by email and they responded very promptly and provided clear and thorough answers to my questions. I followed the instructions and switched on my esim on arrival at Kansai airport and was connected immediately. Throughout our 17 days in Japan I had perfect reception, even in the Japanese Alps.
