We decided on a last-minute trip to Tokyo for 5 days. After confirming our iPhones were unlocked, I researched eSim for Japan - there are plenty of excellent reviews on YouTube. Japan Wireless seemed the easiest and cheapest while still delivering excellent service. We stayed in the greater Tokyo metropolitan area and had excellent cellular data throughout our trip. My main usage was with Google Maps for the trains, and it was invaluable especially after changing plans on the go. The other main usages were GO app for taxis and Google Translator (especially the camera feature) during shopping etc as well as a currency exchange calculator app. Be sure to bring a portable charger too! If you don't have one, you can get fairly cheap ones in Tokyo especially if Akihabara is one of your destinations. However, if you plan to use it during the trip, you cannot claim tax-free. Last but not least, for the 3 of us during our short trip, I decided to get 3 eSims rather than a mobile hotspot so that we didn't need to remain tethered to each other.
