I’m not sure what it was, but I got an eSIM from Japan wireless a few years ago and it seemed like I was routing through some sort of Hong Kong ISP. The service was much better this time and it also seemed like everything was basically running through KDDI. I had excellent coverage everywhere and most of the time I didn’t even feel the need to get on Wi-Fi.
